State Library of Victoria Pictograms

The pictogram designs for State Library Victoria aims to increase inclusivity, diversity, and knowledge through improving accessibility and reach. Despite having the biggest collection in Victoria with a rich variety of resources and services, many of the library’s features remain under-utilised due to being undiscovered. The biggest reason for this is the lack of clear and effective labelling and way-finding. Thus, the goal is to create simple yet recognisable icons to display as signages within the building as well as thumbnails for their social media sites. For example, the chess Collection has been moved to the Ian Potter Queen’s Hall, so the symbol Is intended to act as a directional sign so it would be convenient to find. On the other hand, less popular collections such as Manuscripts and Diaries can be promoted in a catchy way on their website and Instagram Page. Icons are created for a selection of less popular services and collections such as war and music scores as a way to promote them by making them more convenient to find. To ensure clear cohesion, the icons are reduced to their most significant characteristics, like using the microscope to represent science and technology. Therefore, the minimalistic style of the pictograms aims to serve as a recognizable way-finding And discovery tool while maintaining State Library of Victoria’s shift towards a more contemporary aesthetic.
